Velia Carruthers

I provide a safe, respectful and constructive environment for you to explore and reflect upon what is making you feel stuck and alone or causing you frustration, disappointment and unhappiness. I will seek to open up your capacity to communicate, as well as to stimulate your curiosity about yourself, your partner and others. I specialise in helping couples and individuals to identify and reflect on their patterns of behaviour and how it impacts them and the people closest to them. I look at individual narratives to link the past with the present, to identify the roots of these behaviours and how they are affecting them.

We all value relationships, be they intimate relationships with a partner or wider relationships with family and friends. Healthy, happy relationships have a positive impact on so many areas of our lives.

At times, however, it can be difficult to start a relationship or to maintain one. Financial pressure, the demands of work, unexpected crises, issues around intimacy and sex, infidelity, the impact of children or infertility, health matters, ageing, bereavement, depression and cultural differences can all affect our capacity to communicate and feel close to the people we love.

You may be having some difficulty communicating or experience repeated arguments that don’t ever seem to reach a resolution and where the underlying causes appear far from clear. I also see individuals and couples that are ending a relationship, which can bring about great anxiety and difficulties.

Therapy can be daunting, so I aim to create a non-judgemental and safe space where it is possible to develop and sustain the capacity to open up the communication that is essential in an intimate and creative relationship.

I am trained and work as a training provider in Couple Therapy for Depression (CTfD), which is an integrative, behaviourally based approach designed to build openness and closeness and to improve communication and behaviour in couples where one or both of them have depression. I have an additional qualification in Mentalization-Based Therapy, which supports higher conflict relationships.

I am an experienced bilingual psychodynamic psychotherapist. I work with couples and individuals to help them to understand and address the problems they are having in their relationships, whether in the past or present. I trained at Tavistock Relationships, where I am now a member of staff.
